IEEE-CS President-elect Position 2011

In the office of President, I would work to expand and strengthen the key work of our society in advancing the theory and application of computer technology.    I have served this society for over 25 years and have acquired both a strong knowledge of the organization and the leadership skills that will help me address the needs of both academic computer scientists and industry practitioners.  I have served on the CS Executive Committee as VP for Standards and now as VP for Technical and Conference Activities Board, under four CS Presidents M. Williams, R. Kasturi, S. K. Land, and J. Isaak.

My experience in executive leadership with the society has given me the skills that will help the society be more effective.  To be effective, our society needs to take the ideas and energy and vision of our members and turn them into actions that benefit our field.  It needs leadership that understands how the society works, how it is changing, and what it needs to provide for our members, especially the enormous membership talent and potential in regions 9 and 10.  It needs balance vision and executive discipline that comes from sustained and effective service, such as the service that I have given the society for the past 25 years.

The most important role of the president it to develop leadership, the ability to anticipate the needs of the society and the skills to help the organization accomplish its goals.   My career at AT&T/Lucent Technology and volunteer experiences with the society includes guiding committees, recognizing volunteer’s contributions, aligning the Society’s plans with its long-term goals, collaborating across Society Boards and IEEE Units, making investment for emerging technologies, engaging the practitioner community, and listening to our members and key stakeholders.  It is a leadership that promotes decision based on facts, encourages consensus, and keeps our activities aligned with our mission.   It is a leadership based on experience, on skill, and on accomplishment.

I ask for your continued engagement in your Society and request your support for my vision which is elaborated on www.johnwalz.com.
