Mr. Walz is a lifetime IEEE member, now at the Senior level and has served the Computer Society (CS) since 1980. John was elected to the CS Board of Governors (BoG) and appointed Vice President for Technical and Conferences Activities in 2010. Previously elected CS 1st Vice President for Technical and Conferences Activities for 2009. Previously he was appointed Vice President for Standards Activities in 2007 and 2008 after serving on the IEEE CS Standards Activities Board as Secretary since 1985. John is a member of the IEEE Standards Association (SA) and served as a balloter of draft standards and attended many SA Standard Board meetings. In 2008 he served on the IEEE TAB ad hoc on Standards to promote standards development in all IEEE Societies. He has served on the CS History committee and CS Technical Activities  New Practitioners Committee. John served on the CS Awards committee as the Hans Karlsson Award Chair, 2003-2006. In 2004, he was appointed Planning Chair and Quality Management Study Group Chair for the CS Software and Systems Engineering Standard Committee (S2ESC). Currently he is the Standards Working Group P730 Vice-Chair on Software Quality Assurance. Previously, he was the Local Arrangements Chair for Computer Software Applications Conference (COMPSAC) under Dr. Steven Yau's and Carl K. Chang’s leadership.

Within CS Technical and Conferences Activities, Mr. Walz has worked with volunteer leaders and staff to bring Technical Committees closer to their sponsored Conference organizations for more effective focus on the Society goals including sustainability, high quality papers and IEEE Brand. This year volunteers with staff have streamlined and implemented several key processes: conference approval, committee & conference budget approval, assignment of tier conference support services, and committee Chair elections.

Within CS Standards Activities, Mr. Walz encouraged and facilitated collaborative relationships with other CS boards and other standards organizations. This included elevating the electronics products assessment work to a Standards Committee, negotiating the world-wide learning technologies standards deployment work into IEEE-ISTO. John has encouraged standards work expansion into emerging technologies starting with Gaming technologies, Smart Grid, and Cloud Computing. Mr. Walz has supported CS BoG initiatives in engaging the practitioner community through support of podcasts, webcasts, and practitioner focused conferences. To better engage the practitioner community, he encouraged CS membership to our 10K volunteer base. At the standards working group (WG) level, John has provided leadership as a WG Vice-Chair, WG Editor, and contributed as a WG member.

As member of CS Executive Committee for 4 years, he has encouraged focus on member value and investment in the Conference business. As member of CS Planning Committee, he has helped aligned staff and volunteer leaders together on individual CS Projects with both budgets, measurements, and targets. As member of CS Electronic Products and Services Committee, he has encouraged technical experts become involved in tagging best papers, articles, standards, books, etc to define our important technical domains and to provide additional value to our practitioners. As CS History Committee member, he provided leadership to recognize the past standard leaders for both Standards Committees and WG Chairs. As CS Awards member and Hans Karlsson Award Chair, he resurrected the award after seven years of neglect. As CS T&C New Practitioners Committee, he encouraged inclusion of standards volunteers and focus on the needs of CS’s top ten corporations whose employees belong to CS.

Mr. Walz was accepted into the IEEE-CS Chapters Distinguished Visitor Program. He has received the IEEE Computer Society Golden Core member and recipient of the Distinguished Service and Meritorious Service Awards.
